Johnson City is now one of only 55 ISO Class 2 Departments in New York State and one of just 1482 Departments in the entire United States. Rated a class 4 in 2012, the JCFD is one of only a few nationwide to achieve a classification jump of 2 or more categories at once. ISO’s grading scale ranges from 1 to 10, with 1 being the most difficult to achieve. What is ISO? The International Organization for Standardization, or ISO, is an independent, non-governmental organization, comprised of over 160 countries, worldwide. ISO’s Public Protection Classification Program (PPC) plays an important role in the underwriting process at insurance companies. In fact, most U.S. insurers – including the largest ones – use PPC information as part of their decision-making when deciding what business to write, what coverage to offer or price to charge for personal or commercial property insurance. The rating is calculated by taking into consideration factors such as how long it takes a fire crew to reach an emergency from the time 911 is called, level of fire training of department members, coverage area size, water pressure, extent of hydrants as well as the overall ability of a department to address the emergency needs of its specific community. The Johnson City Fire Department is now rated higher than 97% of the 2,230 New York fire departments that are graded by ISO. Why is this important to me? Because this classification often plays an integral part in determining a homeowner's or business' cost on fire insurance premiums, all policy holders should be certain their insurance company is aware that our fire department has been upgraded to a Class 2 rating.
